Ahrefs Brand Radar vs Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Ahrefs Brand Radar vs Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: what each measures, which pages AI answers cite, how each prices access, and how to test both.

Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit add a measurement layer to the SEO work you already do. The useful buying question is not which dashboard reports the higher score. It is whether either tool helps you find the buyer question you lost, the page that won instead and the change most likely to affect the next answer. Neither vendor's public page walks through that complete chain.

What each product measures

Ahrefs describes Brand Radar as a way to “Track and grow your brand’s visibility across AI answers, YouTube, and Reddit”. Its AI Visibility Index uses pre-collected AI responses. Ahrefs says you can search any brand, product or category, including historical responses back to 2025, with no domain cap.

That makes Ahrefs better suited to broad category scanning than to a single domain's report. You can inspect category patterns, then define custom prompts for the buyer questions that matter to your pipeline. Ahrefs says every paid Ahrefs plan includes a daily custom prompt quota (Lite 5, Standard 10, Advanced 20), each selected prompt is checked daily on every selected platform, and Claude consumes 8 checks per update. Those details matter when monitoring becomes a recurring cost rather than a quick inspection.

Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is framed around brand measurement in AI search. Its AI pricing page lists AI visibility reports for any domain, 25 custom prompts with daily AI rankings, competitor analysis, prompt research and mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity.

The same Semrush page lists site audit for AI readiness and daily, weekly and monthly data updates. It shows £80.22 a month per domain, billed annually, and the monthly option shows the same figure; the £36 a month it also lists is the starting price for additional users. Beyond the custom prompt quota in its paid plans, Ahrefs lists custom prompt packages from £40 a month, and its AI Visibility Index at £159 a month. These are UK prices, read on both vendors' pages on 2 Oct 2026. They are different routes with different scopes, so check the route, domain setup and existing suite access before treating any displayed figure as your total cost.

The terms are easy to blur together. Visibility score is the summary number a platform uses to describe how often a brand appears or gets cited. Custom prompt is a buyer question you choose to monitor. Citation is the source page an AI answer points to. A score can move while the useful detail remains hidden.

The pages AI answers cite

The product descriptions tell you how each platform measures visibility. They do not tell you which kinds of pages tend to supply the answer. Our scan data gives that second piece of context.

Listicles and roundups account for 67.5% of recorded AI citations, while competitor product pages account for 24.4%. The product's own site accounts for 1.5%. Those figures come from CiteGraph's research data, which records 30,585 citations for the listicle and roundup category, 11,052 for competitor product pages and 663 for the product's own site.

Recorded AI citations are concentrated in listicles, roundups and competitor product pages.

This changes what you inspect after a report. Your brand may be mentioned, yet the answer may cite a comparison page that frames the choice against you. Or your domain may appear in a dashboard while the page doing the persuasive work sits elsewhere.

The sample has limits. These shares come from the sites and questions we measured, not every AI answer in the world. We print the margins of the sample; we do not know what we have not measured.

That is why the source page matters as much as the brand mention. Ahrefs and Semrush can help you monitor the result, but your next SEO task may involve a roundup, a rival comparison page or a missing piece of evidence on your own site.

Turn a report into a page change

The practical output should be a chain:

  • the buyer question you care about
  • the answer returned by the engine
  • the brands mentioned and omitted
  • the cited pages
  • the page or evidence you can improve
  • the next scan that tests the change

Picture a typical competitor product page used in a comparison. Before the change, it opens with a feature list, follows with a comparison table and gives no verdict. It does not say which product suits a small SEO team or which suits a larger marketing department.

After the change, the opening paragraph names those buyer types and matches each to a product. The page moves the table below that explanation, puts the material differences into the main text, states the limits of each option and links claims to accessible sources.

The page did not become a slogan. It became easier to quote.

That still does not guarantee inclusion. The next answer may cite a roundup or a rival page. The improvement is that you can now test a clear claim against a buyer question instead of treating a moving score as proof that the page works.

The weekly research on who owns AI answers shows why pages beyond your domain deserve attention. The free AI visibility checker can help you inspect a small set of questions before you commit to a monitoring suite.

Test the workflow before you buy

You can complete the setup and first read of the results quickly. The final check happens later, after the product's next scheduled refresh.

  1. Write down the buyer questions your team already uses in sales calls, support replies or comparison pages. Keep the wording unchanged across both tools.
  2. Add those questions as custom prompts where the product allows it. Record the returned answer, the brands mentioned, the cited domains and the update frequency shown by the platform.
  3. Mark each result as an owned citation, competitor citation, roundup or another page type. Do not collapse those into one visibility number.
  4. Pick a missing answer and inspect the page that won. Note the claim it supplied, the comparison it made and the part your page leaves unclear.
  5. Rewrite a page section to answer that buyer question directly. Record what changed, then run the same prompt again when the product's next daily, weekly or monthly update is available, depending on the platform.

Use the Ahrefs route when broad category inspection, historical responses and daily custom prompt tracking fit your research process. Use the Semrush route when domain reports, daily AI rankings, competitor research and an existing Semrush workflow carry more weight. The public pages support those distinctions. They do not establish a universal winner.

As noted above, the public prices describe different routes, not the same product at two prices. Run the workflow test first, then ask each vendor what your route, domain count and existing suite access actually include.

You can also separate the audit from the subscription decision. CiteGraph's free AI readiness check runs 15 checks without an account and shows the fix for each. Its pricing page lists plans at $19, $29 and $69 a month (the $19 plan asks ChatGPT only), each paid from the day it starts and cancellable from Billing at any time. That is a different job from comparing Ahrefs Brand Radar with Semrush: it checks readiness and scan evidence rather than replacing either suite's broader brand reporting.

SEO still supplies the pages and evidence. The added work is measuring how those materials appear in AI answers, then turning the result into a page change you can test.
