Compare Ahrefs Brand Radar alternatives by what they show, how they measure AI visibility, and which teams should avoid buying another tracking tool.

CiteGraph is a practical alternative to Ahrefs Brand Radar when you need the AI answer itself, rather than a visibility number. Brand Radar measures visibility across a large pre-collected prompt index described on Ahrefs’ Brand Radar page, while an answer-level scan shows the response, the source and the possible fix.
The rest of this explains when to stick with Ahrefs, where an answer-level tool fits, and how to test the difference in under an hour.
Brand Radar starts with visibility
Ahrefs describes Brand Radar as a way to “Track and grow your brand’s visibility across AI answers, YouTube, and Reddit” on its Brand Radar page. The product reports mentions, citations and AI Share of Voice. Ahrefs defines a mention as how often your brand name appears in an answer, and a citation as how often AI links to your pages or domains.
That helps when you need to know how often the brand appeared. It is less useful when the next step is to inspect what the assistant said, which page it used, and what your team should change.
An AI visibility number can hide several different jobs, including monitoring mentions, inspecting a specific answer, or finding out why you disappeared from a buyer question. Pick the job before picking the tool.
Brand Radar can do more than count names. Ahrefs says it runs search-backed prompts through AI platforms and stores every response. It also offers Custom Prompts for buyer questions you define, with results populated from the moment you start tracking.
The fit gets less clear for an early-stage company, an uncommon category or a small set of high-value questions. Ahrefs says its index “may have limited coverage for brands with little or no search volume”. It also says Custom Prompts are useful when your brand is not well known or your queries are uncommon.
Alternatives expose the answer
The strongest alternative is not necessarily the tool with the largest prompt index. It is the tool that shortens the distance between an AI result and a page change.
CiteGraph’s scan model is built around buyer questions sent to four AI engines through their official APIs. Its public pricing page says a scan on Starter or Growth puts ten buyer questions to those engines three or five times each, while the ChatGPT Only plan asks ChatGPT alone. The output includes the verbatim answers, lost answers and drafted fixes, rather than only a visibility score.
That changes the workflow. You can see whether the assistant named you, which competitors appeared, and which pages it cited. You can then inspect the cited page instead of treating the score as the end of the investigation.
The citation pattern in our research supports that approach. In the sample behind our weekly research on who owns AI answers, listicles and roundups made up 67.5% of recorded citations. Competitor product pages made up 24.4%. Together, those two page types accounted for 91.9% of citations, with every other page type sharing the remainder.
Listicles, roundups and competitor product pages account for most recorded AI citations.
This doesn’t mean every company should publish a roundup. It means a mention counter can’t tell you which page type is doing the work, and an answer-level scan can.
The rest of the sample was much smaller. Community threads accounted for 3.4% of citations, the scanned product’s own site for 1.5%, documentation for 1.1%, social posts and review platforms for 0.8% each, YouTube for 0.4%, news for 0.1%, and Wikipedia for 0% in the recorded sample. Those figures are useful as a map, not as a promise about your category.
The pricing shape is different too. Starter costs $29 a month for 2 projects, 10 questions per project, 3 runs per question on 4 engines, 6 tracked rivals and 30 written pages a month, meaning drafted fix content the tool generates for you.
Growth costs $69 a month for 3 projects, 10 questions per project on 4 engines, 10 tracked rivals and 60 written pages a month.
The cheapest plan, ChatGPT Only, costs $19 a month for 1 project and 20 questions, asked on ChatGPT only. Weekly scans ask each question 3 times on every plan; a scan you start on Growth asks it 5 times. These details come from the pricing page.
Plans are paid from the day they start, and each can be cancelled from Billing at any time. The free AI readiness check needs no account, runs 15 checks and shows the fix for each.
The free AI visibility checker and leaderboards offer other public starting points. Neither replaces checking your own questions, because a leaderboard cannot stand in for the buyer conversation that matters to you.
There is a fair argument against this position. If your team already uses Ahrefs for links, keywords and content research, adding Brand Radar may reduce tool sprawl. A single suite can be easier to report on than a separate answer inspection tool, and a large pre-collected index can help when you care about broad market visibility.
That argument holds. The alternative is better for the narrower job of seeing what an assistant answered and what your team can change. If your team does not need that job, Brand Radar may be enough.
If your team codes the fixes, the MCP connection is part of the fit test. CiteGraph runs as an MCP server, so Claude, Cursor or VS Code can read a scan and apply readiness fixes in a repository, as described in its MCP documentation.
What we cannot tell you
We measure what our scans record. We don’t know what we haven’t scanned. The citation shares above come from our scan data, not from every AI answer, industry or prompt a buyer could ask.
The sample can show where citations appeared in the recorded answers. It can’t tell you that your product will receive 24.4% of citations from competitor product pages, or that a roundup will cite you next week. It also can’t settle whether Ahrefs’ broader index or a smaller answer-level scan will give your team better decisions.
Ahrefs’ public pages state that paid Ahrefs plans include a daily Custom Prompts quota, with Lite at 5, Standard at 10 and Advanced at 20. From a UK session on 2 Oct 2026, they also listed custom prompt packages from £40 a month, with overage at £0.0160 per check billed monthly, and Brand Radar AI, with its AI Visibility Index, from £159 a month. Ahrefs shows prices in your local currency, and your bill depends on how many prompts you track, on which platforms and how often.
We also can’t tell you that a citation equals a recommendation. A page may be cited without the product being selected. A brand may be mentioned without a useful link, which is why the answer, the source and the buyer question belong in the same review.
A quick check decides fit
You can test the difference before committing to another line item. Keep the test small and use questions that could affect a deal.
Before you pay for a scan, the free AI readiness check can show whether your own site has basic issues. The procedure below tests the more specific question of how AI tools handle your buyer questions.
Write down buyer questions. Use comparison, alternative and category questions your prospects already ask, rather than questions containing your brand name.
Run those questions yourself through ChatGPT, Perplexity, or whichever AI tool you already use for this. Record the answer, the named products and every linked source you can see.
Mark each result as a mention, a citation, both or neither. Keep the answer text beside the label.
Group the linked pages by type. Start with listicles, roundups, competitor product pages and community threads, since those types dominate our recorded sample.
Pick one missing answer and one weak page. Decide whether your next action is monitoring, a new comparison page, a clearer product page or a technical fix.
Price the work against the tool. If you need ongoing schedules, compare the subscription. If you need one inspection, the pricing page shows that a full scan comes with a monthly plan you can cancel from Billing at any time, and a new account sees one live AI answer on its own domain before paying.
The test should end with a decision, not another dashboard. If the answer text never changes what you publish, your current mention tracking may be enough. If every useful action starts with opening the response and its source, an answer-level alternative is doing the more relevant job.
The opening point came from Ahrefs’ broad prompt index. What has changed is that you now have a way to inspect the answer behind a visibility result, test the workflow with a small sample, and decide whether that extra visibility is worth paying for.
