Learn how to get featured on ChatGPT by separating brand mentions from citations, then improving the pages that support each outcome.

“Surely this is just SEO” is a fair objection. If your pages are useful and clear, the same work should help search engines and AI assistants find them.
It still misses an important distinction when you ask how to get featured on ChatGPT. You can be named in the answer text, linked as a source, or both. Those outcomes overlap, but they are not the same, and the engines in our sample handled the same buyer questions differently.
Featured means two different things
When a founder says they want to be featured on ChatGPT, they often mean one of two things.
The first is a mention. The assistant writes your product or company name in the answer. A buyer sees you in a recommendation, comparison or explanation. This is the visible result most teams care about.
The second is a citation. The assistant links to a page it used as a source. That page could be yours, or it could belong to a review site, a roundup, a competitor or a community thread. A citation can support a mention, but it does not guarantee one.
Our weekly research on who owns AI answers records both signals. In the current sample, we recorded 45,309 citations across 7,260 AI answers. Those answers came from 60 scans of 41 sites in 44 categories, covering 442 distinct buyer questions.
The citation pool is heavily concentrated in a few page types. Listicles and roundups account for 67.5% of recorded citations, while competitor product pages account for 24.4%. Together, they make up 91.9%.
That leaves little room for most other page types. Community threads account for 3.4%, a product’s own site for 1.5%, documentation for 1.1%, social posts for 0.8%, review platforms for 0.8%, YouTube for 0.4%, news for 0.1%, and Wikipedia for 0% in the recorded sample.
Listicles and competitor product pages account for most recorded AI citations.
This does not mean your own site has no value. It means that, when an assistant needs evidence for a buyer answer, pages written to compare, rank or explain products appear far more often in this sample than product homepages do.
No vendor we reviewed claims it can guarantee a mention. Treat that promise as something to test, not something to buy.
The four engines do not treat the same question alike
The four engines do not behave the same way on this question. We sampled 1,787 Perplexity answers, 1,784 Gemini answers, 1,781 ChatGPT family answers and 1,467 Claude answers. The figures come from CiteGraph's measurement method.

The gap between 8.2% and 4.4% is the useful part: Perplexity cited more sources and named the product more often in this sample.
That gap changes how you read a result. A product can have a healthy citation profile in a wider sample and still appear less often in ChatGPT answer text. The engine may be using fewer sources, choosing different source types, or making a tighter selection of named recommendations.
The share of sampled answers naming the product varied by engine.
This is a sample, not a census. It includes 7,624 distinct domains and 16,506 distinct pages, but we have not measured every engine, question, site or answer. We measure samples, we print the margins, and we do not know what we have not measured.
The practical lesson is simple: test the engine you care about. A result from Perplexity does not establish that you will appear in ChatGPT answers. Being cited once on one question is not a pattern, so test the question again before you trust the result.
A single “AI visibility” number can also mislead. It may combine names and links, or combine engines with different source behaviour. Ask for the underlying events instead: which answer named you, which page it cited, and which engine produced it.
Make the answer easier to write
You cannot submit a form that forces an assistant to mention your company. You can make the facts an assistant needs easier to find, compare and repeat.
Start with the questions buyers already ask. A page aimed at “best tools for a small team” needs different evidence from a page aimed at “software for regulated finance teams”. State who the product suits, who it does not suit, the main alternatives and the conditions that change the recommendation.
Write those facts in direct sentences. Put the product name beside the category, use consistent names across the site, and explain differences rather than filling the page with broad claims. An assistant looking for a comparison can use a specific statement more easily than a slogan.
Then build pages that other sites can cite. The two dominant citation types we named earlier are the ones you can influence: get into the roundups, and make sure the competitor comparison pages describe you fairly.
Your own site still supplies the raw material. Keep product facts, pricing conditions, use cases and limitations in crawlable text. Link related pages so a reader can move from a category explanation to a detailed feature page without guessing where the evidence lives.
The goal is not to repeat the same paragraph everywhere. It is to make the same core facts stable enough that a roundup, comparison page or assistant can describe them without filling gaps from memory.
Check both outcomes, not one
You can run a useful first check in a short session.
Choose buyer questions that include your category, use case and likely alternatives. Keep the wording unchanged across the engines.
Run each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, then save the answer text and every cited page.
Record separate results for your product named in the prose and one of your pages cited as a source.
Group the cited pages by type. Note whether they are roundups, competitor pages, community threads, your own pages or another category.
Compare the gaps. If you are named but not cited, inspect the sources that support the answer. If you are cited but not named, inspect whether the page states the product’s use case and fit clearly enough.
Keep the question, engine and date with each result. Otherwise, you will end up comparing a changed answer with an old one and calling the difference strategy.
Our free AI visibility checker is designed for this kind of inspection, while the free AI readiness check can help you look for basic gaps before you spend time on outreach or new content. Neither changes the engine’s answer. They give you a way to record what happened.
The next step depends on the missing outcome. If the product is named but your site never appears among the sources, improve the pages that explain the product and earn mentions on pages assistants already cite. If your site is cited but the product is absent from the answer, make the page’s recommendation context clearer and test more buyer questions.
Do not treat a citation as proof of a recommendation. A source link tells you that a page was used. It does not tell you that the assistant endorsed the company, or that the buyer will notice the link.
The same caution applies to a mention. Being named in answer text is useful, but it can be a passing reference, a caveat or a poor fit. Read the surrounding sentence and record the role your product played.
You don't get featured on ChatGPT, you get named in some answers and cited in others, and you have to earn each one on its own terms.
Questions people ask
How can I get my product mentioned in ChatGPT answers?+
There is no form that forces ChatGPT to mention your company. Make buyer relevant product facts easy to find, and earn coverage on roundups and comparison pages that assistants cite.
Why does ChatGPT cite my page without mentioning my product?+
A citation and a product mention are separate outcomes. Make your product’s category, use case, alternatives, fit and limitations clear enough for the answer to describe.
How should I test whether ChatGPT will recommend my product?+
Run consistent buyer questions in ChatGPT and record whether your product is named, your pages are cited, or neither happens. Keep the question, engine and date with each result, then test the same questions again.
